In response to comment and question. Fresh Creek (First Creek) and several inlets to the east (for that matter several to the west) extended much further inland than they do today. Some of them extended as far north as present day Linden Boulevard and beyond. Much of the land south of Linden Boulevard was marsh and meadowlands. Such designations can be seen noted on fairly recent maps.

In none of the maps that I have reviewed does it appear that the waterways in the New Lots section of Brooklyn were sourced from inland. They all appear to be inlets of Jamaica (Flatbush) Bay.
