Jim Hanley

In 1970, a new apartment building was erected on Third Avenue, between 32nd & 33rd Streets, replacing the rows of storefronts, with apartments above that had been there for generations. During the excavation for the foundation, they struck water, which shut the job down for a couple of weeks, while hydrologists were called in. A resident in the building across the Avenue, where I worked in a deli (478 Third) said, "Oh, the Murray Hill river. They hit that every time they build around here." The neighborhood had seen many high-rises go up in the 20 or so years prior. So, I guess he knew what he was talking about, even if he got its name wrong. From the map above, it seems to run right through that lot.
